Tumbles, Points, Spheres & Carvings: Which Shape Is for You?

Same shopping mood, very different shapes. A smooth tumble, a dramatic point and a tiny carved dragon each bring something different to a collection. Here is a simple guide to the shapes you will see around the shop, with no need to declare one the winner.
Tumbled stones: small and easy to enjoy
Tumbles are polished pieces with rounded surfaces. They are a handy starting point if you want to compare colours and patterns, build a small collection or put together a gift. Check the size rather than judging by a close-up photograph: a tiny tumble and a palm-sized piece can look remarkably similar on a screen.
Points and towers: a little height
These give a display an upright shape. Some specimens have natural points; other pieces are cut and polished into a point or tower. Ask which you are looking at if that matters to you. Check the base and choose a stable place where an accidental nudge will not send the piece tumbling.
Spheres: patterns from every angle
A polished sphere gives you a rounded view of the material as you turn it. Think about a suitable stand as part of the display, because an attractive rolling object is still a rolling object. Keep it well away from the edge of the shelf.
Bowls and carved pieces: shape with personality
Hearts, dragons, mushrooms, bowls and other carvings let you enjoy both the material and the maker’s design. A carved bowl is not automatically food-safe or water-safe, so check its intended use. For detailed carvings, look carefully at fine points and edges when handling or moving them.
Raw specimens: let the texture do the talking
Raw pieces keep more of their irregular surface and character. Some sit happily on a shelf; others need support. Ask how to handle and display a particular specimen rather than assuming every rough surface is equally sturdy.
Choose for your space and your taste
Shapes can carry symbolism in different spiritual practices, but that does not establish a different health effect. Choose what you enjoy looking at, what suits your space and what you can care for comfortably. A shelf of mismatched favourites is still a very good collection.
